Dryland Tip: Reach Through

Purpose:  Thoracic (mid) spine rotation is used during swimming rotation. Unfortunately, the amount of rotation has not been specified, but this rotation allows athlete’s to reach further, maximizing their distance per stroke. The Reach Through teaches a swimmer dynamic thoracic rotation, while stabilizing their lumbar (low) spine, preventing injury.

Directions: Begin with your hands under your shoulders and knees under your hips in the table top position. Next, slightly tighten your abdominals, and then reach one arm between your arm and leg on the opposite side. Reach as far as possible while keeping your head stationary, and then reach your arm in the opposite diagonal, towards the sky.

Perform for 10 – 15 repetitions prior to practice.
