Mario Francisco spent some time developing Cesar Cielo as a young swimmer in Brazil. He talks about Cielo’s work ethic and racing mentality in his adolescent years, including his aptitude as a backstroker, and how losing a backstroke race might have convinced Cielo to switch to freestyle. Francisco’s success in Brazil enabled him to find work as a coach in the United States, moving from a volunteer job to being full-time in a short period of time. He also talks about the differences between age group coaching in Brazil and the United States, particularly the issue of event specialization.
