American Mile 1-mile Ocean Race - Meet Results

9/14/2002 - 9/14/2002   Dana Point, California, USA
The inaugural American Mile 1-mile ocean race was held September 14 at Salt Creek Beach in Dana Point. Proceeds benefited the Twin Towers Orphan Fund and 70 swimmers from California, Oregon and Washington competed for gift certificate prizes ranging from $5 to $50 in value. Randy Eickhoff of UCLA Masters held off hard-charging training partner and coach Gerry Rodrigues by 2 seconds in a fast 18:30 for the win. Diane Gallas of El Segundo Masters similarly battled and outdueled Victor (Tory) Dober of UCI Masters for third overall (and fastest female) in 20:30 to 20:32. Heidi Christensen of Daland Masters was the second female (7th overall) only 13 seconds back in 20:43. Bert & Trish Bergen created this event and announced that $1,500 was raised and that a check will be sent to the Fund. Questions about the 2003 American Mile can be sent to them at bergenluau@cox.net
