Youssef Ramadan Wins Twice as Virginia Tech Handles Queens

Youssef Ramadan won a pair of races as Virginia Tech swept Queens. The men won by a 170-90 score, while the women claimed a 162-97 decision.

Ramadan led off the Hokies’ 400 medley relay in 45.57, combining on the win with Carles Coll Marti, Mario Molla Yanes and Brendan Whitfield in a time of 3:07.15. He went 42.37 in the 100 freestyle to outduel Queens’ 50 free chap Matej Dusa.

Ramadan returned for his bread and butter, going 45.86 to win the 100 butterfly. The reigning NCAA champ helped Va Tech sweep the podium in that event, William Hayon, Tanish George Mathew and Molla Yanes following.

Luis Dominguez Calonge took home a pair of victories.  He went 1:35.64 in the 200 free, leading Whitfield to the wall. He also clocked in at 4:25.67 to dominate the 500 free. Lee Naber, the 1,000 free winner, was second.

Coll Marti won the 200 breaststroke. Va Tech swept backstroke via Gabriel Yuk in the 100 and Nico Garcia in the 200. Ethan Maloney and AJ Pouch went 1-2 in the 100 breast.

Virginia Tech didn’t have it all their way. Dura edged Coll Marti in the 50 with a time of 19.47 seconds, then finished second in the 100 in 42.75. Frantisek Jablcnik finished first in the 400 individual medley in 3:54.78. Andreas Marz was the runner up in both backstroke swims.

The Hokies won the first three women’s races and never looked back. Chase Travis won the 1,000 free in 9:46.67, followed by Emma Atkinson’s winning time of 1:48.90 in the 200 free. Travis would return to win the 500 free with Atkinson second.

Carmen Weiler Sastre anchored Va Tech’s winning 400 medley relay, then swept the backstroke events. She went 53.49 to win the 100 and 1:56.68 to claim the 200 with ease. There was no stopping Caroline Bentz in the sprints, winning the 100 in 49.65 and the 50 in 22.64. Bentz had led off the victorious medley quartet, with Charlotte Rigg and Emily Claesson following.

Queens kept things close with, with breaststroke doing the most damage. Libby Livesay went 1:03.77 to win the 100 in a 1-2 result with Sarah Brown, whose 2:17.10 won the 200. Madeline Foster finished in 53.99 seconds to edge Claesson to the 100 fly win. Danielle Melilli was second in both sprint events for Queens.
