YMCA Nationals: Daniel Diehl Breaks Five Meet Records; Greater Somerset Claims Team Title

With the men’s and women’s combined team rankings, Greater Somerset County won the 2023 YMCA National Long Course Swimming Championship team title with 920.5 points.

York and York County YMCA was second with 833.5 points, followed by Y-Spartaquatics (736), Upper Main Line (658) and Lakeland Hills Family YMCA (572).

Greater Somerset County YMCA claimed the women’s team championship with 578 points to finish ahead of York and York County (475), Upper Main Line (470), Fanwood Scotch Plains (408) and Y-Spartaquatics (350).

There were 36 teams to score in the meet.

In the men’s meet, Y-Spartaquatics won with 386 points, holding off York and York County (358.5), Lakeland Hills Family YMCA (346), Greater Somerset County (342.5) and Ridley Area (321).

In the men’s meet, Cumberland YMCA’s Daniel Diehl broke five meet records to dominate the field.

He the meet record to win the 100 freestyle in 50.00. He also claimed the meet record in the 200 free at 1:49.53.

Diehl also broke the meet record in the 100 bacskstroke at 53.91, two seconds ahead of the field. He broke the meet record in the 100 butterfly (52.27) as well as the 200 IM mark in 2:00.97.

Greater Somerset’s Kenneth Barnicle won the 200 backstroke in 2:02.52. Garrett Gould won the 50 fly (24.28).

York and York County’s Carlos Hidalgo won the 50 free (23.19). He teamed with Nathan Welker, Will Parker and Roman Torres to win the 200 medley relay (1:44.37).

Lynchburg YMCA’s JC Gordon won the 400 free (4:02.78) and the 1500 free (16:10.49). Jack Mills won the 200 fly (2:02.37).

Powel Crosley Jr. YMCA’s Nathan Spetz won the 800 (8:23.56).

Regional YMCA of Western Connecticut’s Peter Horan won the 50 back (25.95).

Oshkosh Community YMCA’s Drew Gaerthofner won the 50 breast (29.05), 100 breast (1:02.77) and 200 breast (2:18.13) to sweep the breaststroke events.

Lakeland Hills Family YMCA’s Owen Markowitz won the 400 IM in 4:29.86. He teamed with Connor Johnson, Max Connelly and Will Kilponen to won the 400 medley relay (3:49.46).

Ridley Area’s Shane Eckler, Jonathan Hoole, Ben Kutufaris and Jake Kennedy won the 200 free relay in a meet-record 1:33.57. The same quartet won the 400 free relay in 3:30.03.

Y-Spartaquatics’ Nick Bracall, Oliver Stull, Maddex Ternes and Colin Jordan won the 800 free relay in 7:47.52.

Women’s meet

In the women’s meet, Greater Somerset’s Anna Moesch, 17, won the 50 freestyle in a meet record 24.87. She also won the 200 free in 2:00.62 and 400 IM in 4:55.56. Teammate Meghan Sharma won the 50 breaststroke (32.61). Emily Thompson won the 200 IM in a meet-record 2:16.18.

Greater Somerset’s Colleen Bull, Erica Maltsev, Moesch and Thompson won the 200 free relay in a meet-record 1:44.33. The quartet also won the 400 free relay in a meet-record 3:49.12 and 800 free relay in 8:28.37. Charlotte Holliday, Sharma, Thompson and Moesch won the 400 medley relay in a meet-record 4:13.48.

Fanwood Scotch Plains’ Clare Logan won the 50 backstroke (28.51) in a meet record. She also won the 50 butterfly (27.59). Logan teamed with Emily Constable, Billie Sherratt and Catherine Ritter to win the 200 medley relay in a meet-record 1:55.53.

Blair Regional YMCA’s Leah Shackley won the 100 backstroke in a meet-record 59.56. She also won the 200 backstroke in a meet-record 2:09.13, the 100 butterfly in a meet-record 57.98 and claimed the 200 butterfly in 2:11.93.

Wyckoff Family YMCA’s Katie Lawrence won the 100 free (56.52).

Western Branch YMCA’s Katelyn Fitzgerald won the 400 free (4:23.44), the 800 free (9:03.66) and the 1500 free (17:24.42).

Y-Spartaquatics’ Delaney Franklin won the 100 breaststroke (1:11.28) and the 200 breast (2:32.74).
