Yannick Agnel Will Defend Olympic Gold in 200 Freestyle

Yannick Agnel will defend his 200 freestyle Olympic gold in Rio, he told RMC Sport on Sunday.
Agnel shared that he is looking forward to representing his country on the 800 freestyle relay at the upcoming European Championships. He is now motivated to do well in the 200 individually and wants to make the most of that opportunity in Rio, where he will be swimming the 200 and the relay.
At the 2016 French Olympic Open National Championships (also the Olympic Trials), Agnel appeared to touch second in the 200 freestyle. However, official results showed Jeremy Stravius as the winner and Jordan Pothian in second. That left Agnel in third place without an individual Olympic invitation.
Agnel appealed the ruling, though that appeal was denied. He had a similar issue after his morning swim. His time did not register, possibly because he finished too low on the touchpad. That prelims issue was resolved and he was issued the third seed.
Pothian declined his place as the second official qualifier, in order to focus on his 400 freestyle and the relay.

Very gracious of Jordan Pothian to relinquish his 200m individual swim for Yannick Agnel.
By the way, the correct spelling of Yannick’s surname is “Agnel”, and not “Angel”. Have a look at his cap on the picture.
