Wyatt Davis, Casey Chung Lead Michigan to Sweep of Northwestern

Fresh off a victorious evening Friday for both the women and men, the University of Michigan swim teams took care of business against Northwestern Saturday in Ann Arbor. The Wolverine men crushed the Wildcats 204 to 95 as Wyatt Davis led the way with three wins while Michigan’s women beat Northwestern in a much tighter contest, 162.5 to 137.5.

Davis earned individual victories in the 100 backstroke (46.91), 200 back (1:45.60) and 100 butterfly (47.50), and he led off a relay team with Brendan FitzpatrickGal Cohen Groumi and Bence Szabados that won the 200 medley relay (1:26.66). Meanwhile, Jared Daigle won the 1000 freestyle (9:12.10) and 200 IM (1:48.21) for the Wolverines, while Eduardo Moreas won the 200 free (1:37.91) and 500 free (4:28.32).

Szabados won the 50 free in 19.76, and Ansel Froass took first in the 200 breaststroke (2:00.74). Cameron Gammage earned diving wins in 1-meter (365.70) and 3-meter (319.43), and Szabados, Cam PeelNikola Acin and Cohen Groumi won the 200 free relay for the Wolverines in 1:19.30.

For Northwestern, meanwhile, 200-meter fly Olympic bronze medalist Federico Burdisso touched the wall first in the 200 fly (1:44.47) and then the 100 free, where he edged out Szabados by five hundredths, 43.71 to 43.76. Kevin Houseman swam a time of 54.88 to win the 100 breast.

Meanwhile, a balanced effort from the Michigan women helped secure this win. Chung won the 100 back (54.62) and 200 back (1:58.11), and the team of Chung, Letitia SimLindsay Flynn and Claire Newman won the 200 medley relay (1:39.39). Michigan also secured early wins from Christy Liang in the 200 free (1:49.54), Hana Shimizu-Bowers in the 200 fly (1:59.72) and Flynn in the 50 free (22.63). Later on, Sim touched first in the 200 breast (2:15.34), and Katie Crom won the 500 free (4:50.79). The final Wolverine to claim an individual win was Devon Kitchel in the 200 IM (2:02.50).

For Northwestern, Jasmine Nocentini won the 100 breast (1:00.06) and 100 free (49.28), while Lola Mull (1000 free, 10:03.09) and Miriam Guevara (100 fly, 54.58) were also individual top finishers. Markie Hopkins earned wins on the boards in 3-meter (309.30) and 1-meter (267.60), and the 200 free relay team of Nocentini, Ally LarsonAudrey Yu and Lindsay Ervin secured a win in 1:30.86.
