MANCHESTER, England, April 11. GREAT Britain's Kristopher Gilchrist surfaced from an epic battle in the men's 200 breast with a world title at the FINA World Short Course Championships.
Gilchrist touched out Ukraine's Igor Borysik, 2:06.18 to 2:06.21, for the title. Gilchrist finished short of Ian Edmond's national record of 2:05.63 from 2003, but Borysik dropped his national record of 2:07.28 set this morning.
"This is the icing on the cake," Gilchrist told meet organizers. "It was a hard race but having the home crowd cheer for you makes such a huge difference. I'm chuffed to bits."
South Africa's William Diering also pushed the top pair with a time of 2:06.85 to crush the national record of 2:07.91 set by Terence Parkin back in 2000.
Denmark's Chris Christensen took fourth with a national-record time of 2:07.20. He cleared his own standard of 2:07.45 set in December.
