MAUI, Hawaii, August 27. The first night of finals at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships witnessed three meet records as well as a World Junior Record going up on the scoreboard. Overall, Team USA won seven of the eight gold medals on offer in what proved to be a dominant display of the depth of the Red, White and Blue.
Women’s 200 free
USA’s Katie Drabot led wire-to-wire in the women’s 200-meter freestyle as she clocked a 1:58.73 for the win. That’s a second off Dagny Knutson’s 2009 meet record of 1:57.73, but more than enough to win tonight. It also is the first time under 1:59 for Drabot, who has a 1:59.32 lifetime best from the 2013 junior nationals.
Australia’s Shayna Jack, the top seed out of prelims, took second in 1:59.48 as the only other sub-2:00 of the night. USA’s Courtney Harnish placed third in 2:00.46.
Canada’s Alexandra Aitchison (2:00.81), Australia’s Chelsea Gillett (2:01.04), Japan’s Sachi Mochida (2:01.04), Japan’s Hiroko Makino (2:02.87), and Canada’s Alexandra Buscher (2:03.66) also vied for the 200 free title tonight.
Australia’s Tamsin Cook won the B final in 2:00.42 with Japan’s Rikako Ikee finishing second in 2:01.98. USA’s Stanzi Moseley wound up third in 2:02.51.
China’s Zhu Yifei (2:02.98), China’s Li Tete (2:03.71), Canada’s Danica Ludlow (2:03.90), China’s Wang Siqi (2:04.23) and Mexico’s Monika Gonzalez (2:04.23) also competed in the consolation heat.

Men’s 200 free
After setting a personal best with a 1:48.51 this morning, USA’s Townley Haas returned tonight with a meet record in the finale with a 1:48.32. That swim undercut the 1:48.44 set by Clay Youngquist back in 2010 and continued Haas’ incredible roll as a junior swimmer this summer. That’s the ninth-fastest 18-and-under swim in the 200 free for the U.S. He already won an amazing four junior national titles earlier this month, and is wasting no time in doing the same here in Maui.
USA’s Blake Pieroni charged to a second-place time of 1:48.85, his first time under 1:49, while Japan’s Katsuhiro Matsumoto placed third in 1:49.90.
China’s Li Yongwei (1:51.57), Canada’s Peter Brothers (1:52.26), Australia’s Samuel Young (1:52.64), Australia’s Damian Fyfe (1:53.57) and Japan’s Fuyu Yoshida (1:55.01) also put up times in the finale.
USA’s Aidan Burns pulled away down the stretch to win the B final handily with a 1:50.48. Australia’s Max Carlson wound up second in 1:52.15 with Canada’s Matthew Ackman just behind with a third-place 1:52.45.
Canada’s Tristan Cote (1:52.47), Japan’s Juran Mizohata (1:52.51), New Zealand’s Dominic Mildon (1:53.70), New Zealand’s Julian Weir (1:53.71) and Mexico’s Lorenzo Loria Elias (2:00.30) rounded out the consolation field.

Women’s 100 back
USA’s Amy Bilquist put on a back-half clinic in the A final as she overhauled the field with a 1:01.00 for the win. She came home in 31.12 to race right past the field, and take .04 off her personal best from junior nationals. She came up a bit shy of Sayaka Akase’s 2010 meet record of 1:00.82.
Canada’s Daniell Hanus raced her way to second in 1:01.51, while early leader Rio Shirai of Japan faded to third in 1:01.82.
Australia’s Lucy McJannett (1:02.21), Australia’s Minna Atherton (1:02.72), Japan’s Natsumi Sakai (1:03.01), Korea’s Dalin Lee (1:03.49) and USA’s Hannah Weiss (1:03.57) comprised the rest of the big final.
Claire Adams of the USA won the B final going away with a 1:02.60, while China’s Song Yutong took second in 1:03.39. Japan’s Rika Yuhara finished third in 1:03.53.
Australia’s Monique Rae (1:03.62), Canada’s Heather Lam (1:03.92), Canada’s Danika Huizinga (1:04.05), China’s Zhu Menghui (1:04.43) and New Zealand’s Rebekah Bradley (1:05.17) touched fourth through eighth in the consolation.

Men’s 100 back
USA went 1-2 in the men’s 100-meter back as Connor Green raced his way to the title in 55.08. That’s a huge lifetime best, down from his 55.54 from the World Junior Championships last summer. Michael Andrew, the 15-year-old professional swimmer from the U.S., took second in 55.81 as he just missed his best of 55.73 from juniors. Jack Conger’s meet record of 54.07 from 2012 will remain on the books barring a huge medley relay leadoff this week.
Canada’s Markus Thormeyer (56.07), New Zealand’s Andrew Trembath (56.48), Canada’s Anders Klein (56.69), Australia’s Peter Mills (57.11), Mexico’s Andy Song An (57.52) and Mexico’s Mateo Gonzalez (58.04) also swam in the finale.
Canada’s Tim Zeng initially was listed as the B final winner with a 57.19, but drew a disqualification giving the win to Australia’s Benno Negri with a 57.70. Canada’s Daniel Kuiack took second in 57.71 with USA’s Ethan Young earning third in 58.45.
Japan’s Juran Mizohata (58.97), Fiji’s Epeli Rabua (1:09.75), Fiji’s Kalen Eyre (1:13.36) and Fiji’s Viliame Takayawa (1:14.03) also competed in the consolation.

Women’s 200 fly
Japan’s Haruno Ito had too much for the rest of the field to handle down the final 50 meters as she clipped USA’s Cassidy Bayer at the wall, 2:09.02 to 2:09.08. Both times beat the 2007 meet record of 2:09.48 set by Japan’s Natsuki Akiyama. Ito (32.67) and Bayer (33.01) came roaring home in the final 50. USA’s Hannah Kukurugya went out hard, leading through 150 meters, but could not hold on as she posted a third-place 2:09.68 when Ito and Bayer flew right past her in the final 50 meters.
Japan’s Suzuka Hasegawa (2:10.41), Australia’s Christina Licciardi (2:14.04), Canada’s Jacomie Styrdom (2:15.10), New Zealand’s Grace Sommerville (2:16.47) and Australia’s Megan Gianotti (2:16.76) also participated in what wound up being an exciting championship heat.
USA’s Ella Eastin pulled away down the stretch to win the B final tonight in 2:12.37, while Japan’s Rika Nara wound up taking second in 2:14.08 after making an early push on Eastin. USA’s Kim Williams clinched third in 2:15.71.
Australia’s Meg Bailey (2:17.05), Mexico’s Sharon Rodriguez (2:17.21) and Japan’s Saisa Yamaguchi (2:20.71) made up the rest of a small consolation field.

Men’s 200 fly
USA’s Andrew Seliskar rocketed his way to a World Junior Record in the men’s 200-meter fly as he also shattered his own meet record in the event tonight. Seliskar scorched the finale in 1:55.92, lowering the World Junior Record of 1:55.95 set by Hungary’s Tamas Kenderesi at the Youth Olympic Games last week.
Meanwhile, Selisker also took down his meet record of 1:56.65 from prelims that lowered the 1:57.40 from Kenta Hirai in 2012. His time ranks him 12th in the world this year.
Japan’s Yuya Yajima took second in 1:58.30, while USA’s Corey Okubo earned third in 1:59.23 as the only other sub-2:00 swimmer of the night.
Australia’s Jacob Hansford (2:00.02), New Zealand’s Bradlee Ashby (2:01.53), Australia’s Joachim Bardrum (2:02.37), Canada’s Osvald Nitski (2:02.42) and Japan’s Junya Higuchi (2:02.59) rounded out the rest of the finale.

Women’s 800 free
USA’s Sierra Schmidt, who became widely known to the U.S. national swimming community as a bit of a dancing queen with her antics behind the blocks before her events at juniors and nationals, took home the distance title tonight in 8:34.71. That’s just off her best of 8:34.58 from junior nationals, but enough to take the title tonight.
Australia’s Sacha Downing placed second in 8:37.04 with USA’s Courtney Harnish claiming third in 8:40.67.
Canada’s Alexandra Aitchison (8:41.90), Japan’s Yukimi Moriyama (8:42.35), Japan’s Chinatsu Sato (8:42.61), USA’s Madison Homovich (8:42.95), and USA’s Isabelle Rongione (8:45.88) closed out the rest of the top eight in the timed final event.
