MONTREAL, July 17. HELD in the city in 1994, the World Swimming Championships will return to Rome in 2009. The announcement was made by FINA on Saturday, just before the start of this year's championship event in Montreal. Rome was selected over Athens, Dubai (United Arab Emirates), Moscow and Yokohama.
Headed for Melbourne in 2007, the World Champs of 2009 will be the first significant global competition after the Beijing Olympic Games. When the meet was held in Rome in 1994, the likes of Alex Popov and Norbert Rozsa stood on top of the swimming world.
