World Championships: US pair Carson Foster and Chase Kalisz lead 200IM Qualifiers; Leon Marchand The One To Watch

US pair Carson Foster and Chase Kalisz will be looking to turn their silver and bronze medals in the 400IM into gold in the 200IM here in Budapest after impressive swims in this morning’s World Championship heats.

Foster (1:57.94) was impressive in holding off 2017 winner Kalisz (1:58.25) in today’s third of five heats.

Olympic bronze medallist Switzerland’s Jeremy Desplanches (1:58.29) was the equal third fastest qualifier into tomorrow night’s semi-finals with Japan’s defending champion and three-time 400IM world champion Daiya Seto.

But there will be serious challengers from 400IM gold medallist here, the long-stroking Frenchman Leon Marchand – the eighth fastest qualifier in 1:58.70 – but after leading into the freestyle turn backed right off – conserving himself for tonight’s 200m butterfly final.

Also impressive were Hungary’s world junior record holder, 19-year-old Hubert Kos (1:58.47) and South African Matthew Sates (1:58.61).

Down in 15th place is China’s Olympic champion Wang Shun (1:59.51) who has won bronze in this event at the 2015 and 2017 World Championships and 2016 Rio Olympics.
