World Championships: Phoebe Bacon Heads Women’s 200 Back Prelims With 2:07; Peng & Panziera Next Through
Phoebe Bacon set the pace in 2:07.89 to head the women’s 200 backstroke prelims on day six of the World Championships.
There’ll be a new champion with 2019 winner and world record-holder Regan Smith not qualifying for the four-length event at the US trials, underlining the depth of their female backstrokers.
American women have topped the podium in three of the last five worlds thanks to a Missy Franklin double as well as Smith last time out.
Rhyan White was fourth through in 2:09.12 behind teammate Bacon, Peng Xuwei (2:08.53) and Margherita Panziera (2:08.64).
Gwangju silver medallist Kaylee McKeown was fifth through in 2:09.26 with Kylie Masse, who took bronze in 2:09.37.
Only 24 competed across three heats with the 2:16.38 of Jimena Leguizamon Leal sufficient to make the semis.
