World Championships: Marrit Steenbergen Lowers Dutch Record, Holds off Haughey in 100 Free
The women’s 100 freestyle had plenty of firepower heading into the finals, led by an Olympic medalist and a newly crowned Dutch national record holder, not to mention the US’s most versatile swimmer.
The gold medal went to the Dutch record holder – in a new record – as Marrit Steenbergen won the gold medal in 52.26, lowering her national record from the semifinals.
Hong Kong’s Siobhan Haughey, the Olympic silver medalist in this event, finished second in 52.56.
Steenbergen was fourth at the turn but threw down a 26.96 final split – the only one in the field to break 27 on the back half.
Haughey, who turned first at 24.87, was just behind.
Haughey won the gold medal in the 200 freestyle earlier at the World Championships in Doha.
The bronze medal went to Australia’s Shayna Jack, who finished in 52.83.
USA’s do-everything Kate Douglass took fourth in 53.02 in the first of her double on Day 6 of the World Championships.
Fifth place went to Great Britain’s Anna Hopkin (53.09), followed by Brazil’s Stephanie Balduccini (54.05), Poland’s Kornelia Fiedkiewicz (54.06) and Czech Republic’s Barbora Seemanova (54.64).
