World Championships: Lilly King Notches No. 2 Time of 200 Breaststroke Prelims; Kelsey Wog Leads Pace
The last time Lilly King contested the 200-meter breaststroke at the World Championships, she suffered a disqualification during the preliminaries of the event. Three years later, despite racing at 80% of her capacity, King easily got through the opening round.
Racing at the World Champs in Budapest, King managed the second-fastest time of prelims, clocking in at 2:24.46. That time was bettered by only the 2:24.37 of Canada’s Kelsey Wog. Earlier in the meet, King was fourth in the 100 breaststroke while her coach, Ray Looze, indicated she was not racing at full strength. Presumably, King dealt with illness on the road to the World Championships and has not fully recovered.
King was the silver medalist in the event at the Olympic Games, finishing behind world-record setting Tatjana Schoenmaker of South Africa. Schoenmaker is one of several athletes who has bypassed the World Championships and will place her emphasis on next month’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Lithuana’s Kotryna Teterevkova checked in with the third-fastest time of the morning, going 2:24.79, while the United States’ Kate Douglass and Great Britain’s Molly Renshaw tied for fourth in 2:24.54. They were followed by Australian Jenna Strauch (2:24.56).
Germany’s Anna Elendt, the silver medalist in the 100 breaststroke, missed out on the semifinals following a 23rd-place finish in 2:30.08.
