Defending champion Caeleb Dressel made his 2019 worlds bow in the men’s 50 fly.
The 13-time world champion won the title three years ago in Gwangju in 22.35, a championship and American standard.
Dressel was in heat seven of eight, flanked on either side by 2017 world champion Ben Proud and world record-holder Andriy Govorov.
Dylan Carter of Trinidad & Tobago went 22.87 in heat five with Michael Andrew launching his busy schedule in 22.89, with Dressel 0.01 swifter in the following heat.
Thomas Ceccon matched Dressel’s time of 22.88 in the final heat.
Konrad Czerniak out-touched Piero Codia in a swim-off by 0.02 to book the first reserve place in 23.38.
