Qin Haiyang set an Asian record of 57.82 to head the 100 breaststroke field at the World Championships in Fukuoka.

The Chinese athlete split 27.31/30.51 to head the second semi and lower his own Asian standard of 57.93 from the Chinese Championships in May.
It was Qiu’s second journey inside 58 and he stands behind only Peaty – and his eye-watering WR of 56.88 – and Arno Kamminga, with 57.80 at the Tokyo Olympics, in the all-time rankings.

Adam Peaty – who swept the 50 and 100 between 2015 and 2019 – isn’t in Fukuoka as he focuses on his mental health.
Nicolo Martingenhi – the defending champion – led for 90m of the first semi before being overhauled in the final 10m by Olympic silver medallist Kamminga, who touched in 59.08.
Martinenghi said through the Italian federation:
“I started by pushing the first 50 to see how much I had in the tank for the second 50. I did a little better. In the end, the management of the race was what I wanted”.
