The 22-year-old was behind leader Helena Gasson, Beryl Gastaldello and Louise Hansson with 25 to go but came past them all with a freestyle leg of 14:00, the swiftest in the field. Rebecca Meder set an African record of 58.46 in sixth. It was her second medal of the meet following bronze in the 100 free. Splits: 11.86/26.30/43.53/57.53 Gastaldello claimed silver in 57.63 for her second medal of the night following mixed 4×50 free gold with Hansson taking bronze in 57.68. It has been a medal-laden 2022 for Steenbergen: mixed medley bronze at the worlds in Budapest was followed by four golds among a seven-strong haul at the Europeans in Rome. She said: “It’s so unbelievable to see my name and hear that I am a world champion. I felt pretty good, all week I have been going well and the semifinal was really good “In the race I saw the girls and I thought, I just have to fight for this and they really pushed me, and the result was really good and I am over the moon. “I wasn’t able to see everything because I was on my back, I could see what was happening next to me but could only see a little. “I tried not to focus on others, instead to swim my own race. I breathe to the right in the last 25 so I hope that there is no one advancing on my left. “The 2022 long-course season was really good and this will give me a lot of confidence for the season ahead.”
