World Championships, Day 8 Prelims (Women): Tessa Cieplucha Leads Way In 400IM; Canada Head Medley Relay, USA Withdraw

The eighth and final day of prelims got under way at the World Championships on Sunday in Doha.

400m Individual Medley

Summer McIntosh won this event last year in Fukuoka in a championship record of 4:27.11 but it was her fellow Canadian that led on Sunday, Tessa Cieplucha booking lane four in 4:40.80.

Anja Crevar of Serbia will be alongside her after going 4:41.11 with Great Britain’s Freya Colbert – fifth at the 2023 worlds – third through after coming past Anastasia Gorbenko on the final 50m of the third prelim to go 4:42.33.

4×100 Medley Relay

There was no USA in the final prelim, lane four empty as Canada went on to lead throughout and book lane four in 3:58.63.

Sweden were next through in 3:59.35 with the Australian women making no mistake in 4:00.09 ahead of Netherlands in 4:02.09 with 100 free champion Marrit Steenbergen to slot in on the anchor leg this evening.

China were fifth (4:02.22) ahead of Hong Kong, with Siobhan Haughey on breaststroke, progressed in 4:02.34 with Italy (4:02.62) and Poland (4:02.63).

Singapore and South Africa are the two reserves.
