Torri Huske led off for the US girls splitting 24.08 before Claire Curzan took over, clocking 23.30, changing over to Erica Brown who swam a 23.74 before Kate Douglass anchored in a sizzling 22.77 to hold off Australia’s Olympic golden girl Emma McKeon (22.73). McKeon had won the 100 freestyle earlier in the night, but it was the US foursome who spoiled the Dolphins party, clocking 1:33.89 to shave 0.14 off the Championship record set by The Netherlands in Hangzhou in 2018, followed buy the Australians in 1:34.23 and The Netherlands 1:35.36. The other Australian splits times were: Meg Harris (23.98), Madi Wilson (23.51), Mollie O’Callaghan (24.01) with the Netherlands girls Kim Busch swimming 24.20, Maaike de Waard 23.47, Kira Toussaint 24.01 and Valerie van Roon, 23.68. The US victory capped a golden night for Team USA who had earlier taken gold in the women’s 200m butterfly to Dakota Luther in a 1-2 finish with Hali Flickinger claiming silver, followed by the dynamic duo Lilly King and Nic Fink‘s golden double in the women’s and men’s 100m breaststroke, with Kieran Smith holding off Tommy Neil to snatch the 400m freestyle.
