World Anti-Doping Agency Publishes 2019 List of Prohibited Substances and Methods
Earlier this week, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) published its 2019 list of prohibited substances and methods. The list was approved by the WADA Executive Committee on September 20, 2018 and goes into effect January 1, 2019.
The list designates what substances and methods are prohibited both in- and out-of-competition, and which substances are banned in particular sports.
The list is being released by WADA three months in advance, so any athletes can take note and make modifications. The List’s annual revision process is led by WADA, beginning with an initial meeting in January and concluding with the publication of the List by 1 October.
For a substance or method to be added to the List, it must be determined that it meets two of the following three criteria:
- It has the potential to enhance or enhances sport performance
- It represents an actual or potential health risk to the athletes
- It violates the spirit of sport
Among the prohibited methods are
- manipulation of blood and blood components
- chemical and physical manipulation
- gene and cell doping
Among the prohibited substances are
- anabolic agents
- peptide hormones, growth factors, related substances and mimetics
- beta-2 agonists
- hormone and metabolic modulators
- diuretics and masking agents
