The third night of finals at the women’s Pac-12 championships in Federal Way, Wash., featured two more American records courtesy of the Stanford Cardinal, who extended their lead in the team. Stanford now has 1126 points, while Cal is in second place with 953.

USC is third with 762 after pulling ahead of Arizona (744) during Friday’s finals. UCLA rounds out the top five with 640.

The American records came in the 400 IM, when Katie Ledecky took down the mark previously set by Caitlin Leverenz, and in the 100 back, when Ally Howe smashed Natalie Coughlin’s 15-year-old American record in the 100 back.

The session also included men’s platform diving at the beginning of the session. Read our full coverage below.

Men’s platform diving

Stanford swept the top two podium spots as Tarek Abdelghany edged out teammate Ted Miclau, 399.45 to 398.50. That result came despite an incredible final dive that earned Miclau scores in the 8.5-9.5 range. Finishing third was Arizona State’s Heikki Makikallio, who scored 372.15.

USC’s Dashiell Enos finished well back in fourth with 335.95, and ASU’s Youseff Selim was fifth with 321.35. Rounding out the championship final were Cal’s Connor Callahan (305.65), Utah’s Josiah Purss (300.90) and USC’s Nikolas Mamola (291.20).

400 IM

Katie Ledecky trailed Stanford teammate Ella Eastin at the 300-yard mark as the two went head-to-head in the 400 IM at the women’s Pac-12 championships, but then Ledecky unleashed her freestyle. Ledecky split a ridiculous 52.67 on the way home and pulled into the wall in 3:57.68.

That beat the previous American record of 3:57.89 set by Caitlin Leverenz at the 2012 NCAA championships. Ledecky also improved to second all-time in the event, behind only Katinka Hosszu’s NCAA and U.S. Open record of 3:56.54, also set at the 2012 NCAA championships.

Eastin ended up finishing second in 4:00.96, just off the 4:00.36 she swam at the Ohio State Invite in November that had ranked first in the nation this season before Ledecky’s outburst.

Stanford completed the sweep with Allie Szekely, who touched in 4:02.34. That time ranks fourth in the country this season, behind Ledecky, Eastin and Texas’ Madisyn Cox, who swam a 4:01.15 earlier in the evening.

Finishing well back in fourth was Arizona’s Hannah Cox, who finished in 4:07.96. Cal’s Celina Li finished fifth in 4:09.49, followed by Stanford’s Leah Stevens (4:10.00), UCLA’s Emma Schanz (4:12.10) and Arizona State’s Marlies Ross (4:12.67).

USC’s Louise Hansson came from behind on the final lap to storm past Cal’s Noemie Thomas, and then she held off Cal’s Farida Osman at the wall. Hansson won by just one one-hundredth of a second, 50.39 to 50.40. The win marked the first event of the entire meet (including 1-meter diving) won by an athlete from any school besides Stanford.

The times by Hansson and Osman rank second and third in the country, respectively, behind the Pac-12 meet record of 50.38 set by Stanford’s Janet Hu in prelims.

Hu ended up finishing third in finals in 50.59, while Thomas faded to fourth in 50.87. Cal also got fifth-place points from Maddie Murphy, who finished in 51.62. Stanford’s Lindsey Engel took sixth in 51.79, followed by Arizona’s Annie Ochitwa (52.10) and USC’s Madison Wright (52.30).

200 free

Stanford’s Simone Manuel led by more than a second at the final turn, but she had to work for it on the last 50 as teammate Katie Ledecky came charging. Ledecky, less than 25 minutes after setting an American record in the 400 IM, stormed home in 25.24 (to Manuel’s 26.44), but Manuel finished on a full stroke to get in just ahead, 1:40.37 to 1:40.50.

Those times easily surpass Mallory Comerford’s 1:41.70 as the top two times in the country this season, and in history, only Missy Franklin has swum faster than those two times from tonight.

For the second time in three events, Stanford made it a 1-2-3 finish as Lia Neal, who won the Pac-12 title in the event last year, came in at 1:43.62, just holding off the charging Katie McLaughlin and Katie Drabot. McLaughlin, representing Cal, finished fourth in 1:43.75, while Stanford’s Drabot came in fifth at 1:43.78.

USC teammates Stanzi Moseley (1:43.98) and Tatum Wade (1:44.83) finished sixth and seventh, respectively, while Cal’s Abbey Weitzeil took eighth in 1:46.70.

Weitzeil faded badly on the final 50 (29.00) and actually had trouble standing up after her race. She laid on the pool deck for a few minutes and received help from trainers before finally walking off. Swimming World is currently seeking comment on Weitzeil’s health.

Arizona State’s Silja Kansakoski pulled ahead of USC’s Riley Scott and won her first conference championship in the 100 breast. Kansakoski touched the wall in 58.44, the fourth-fastest time in the country and secured the first conference title for women or men since Bob Bowman and his staff took over the ASU program in the spring of 2015.

Scott cracked the 59-second barrier to finish second, touching in 58.92 for the No. 8 spot in the national rankings, and teammate Kirsten Vose finished third in 59.58.

Also breaking 1:00 was Cal’s Marina Garcia, who came in at 59.86, while Stanford’s Kim Williams just missed that barrier with a time of 1:00.05. Arizona’s Kennedy Lohman (1:00.23), USC’s Kelsey Kafka (1:00.76) and Stanford’s Heidi Poppe (1:01.10) also competed in the championship final.

100 back

Stanford’s Ally Howe took down a 15-year-old American and NCAA record Friday night at the women’s Pac-12 championships. Howe blasted a time of 49.69 in the women’s 100 back to knock Natalie Coughlin’s 49.97 off the books.

Coughlin had set that record in 2002 on her way to the second of four straight NCAA championships in that event. The record was Coughlin’s last in the short course yards’ pool.

Howe became only the second woman in history to break the 50-second barrier after Courtney Bartholomew (50.01) and Rachel Bootsma (50.03) came close multiple times over their careers.

Finishing second tonight was Cal’s Kathleen Baker, who touched in 50.27 and improved to sixth all-time in the event. UCLA’s Linnea Mack finished third in 50.56.

Stanford’s Janet Hu, whose prelims time of 50.29 ranks her fifth all-time in the event, settled for fourth in 50.70.

Cal teammates Amy Bilquist (51.29) and Keaton Blovad (52.41) finished fifth and sixth, respectively, while USC’s Hannah Leach (52.56) and Stanford’s Lindsey Engel (53.54) rounded out the top eight.

Stanford freestyler Simone Manuel faced a deficit when she took over on the anchor leg, but for the third time this meet, she came from behind to pass Cal’s Farida Osman and deliver a win for the Cardinal. Manuel split 46.22 on the way home, to Osman’s 47.39. The team of Ally HoweKim WilliamsJanet Hu and Manuel finished in 3:26.74, the fastest time in the country this season.

Cal gave it a run but settled for second. Kathleen Baker edged Howe on the backstroke leg, 50.41 to 50.44, and Marina Garcia and Noemie Thomas maintained that lead before Osman fell just short on the anchor leg. The Bears finished in 3:27.38.
