Women’s 100 Breaststroke Prelims: Aussies Hanson and Jones Qualify One-Two

ATHENS, Greece August 15. THE Aussie 100-meter breaststroke duo of world record-holder Leisel Jones and Brooke Hanson began their campaign with a strong start this morning. Hanson led the way in 1:07.35 while jones grabbed the number two spot in 1:07.69.
However Jones, racing with the USA's Tara Kirk, looked to come home easier than did Hanson in the second half of the race.
The USA's Tara Kirk qualified third in 1:07.92 while Amanda Beard was fifth in 1:08.04. there was a big gap after Beard, with the sixth place qualifier, Luo Xuejuan, more than a second behind.
Former South African Sarah Poewe, now swimming for Germany, was fourth fastest in 1:07.97, her best for the year. Chinese hopes, Luo Xuejuan (1:09.07) and Qu Hui (1:09.29), were also on song. Canada had two qualifiers: Rhiannon Leier (1:09.38) and Lauren van Oosten (1:09.93).
Cut-off for the semifinals was 1:10.33.
