Wisconsin Crushes UC-San Diego, UCLA Women in West-Coast Trip

The University of Wisconsin Badgers traveled to La Jolla, Calif., to begin their spring competition season against UC-San Diego and the women from UCLA. Both the women’s and men’s meets saw Wisconsin have dominant performances, winning all but one event during the contest.

The Wisconsin women’s team of Maggie WanezekHazal OzkanPhoebe Bacon and Hailey Tierney topped the 200 medley relay in 1:39.68. Ozkan added a win in the 50 breaststroke (29.03) and later the 100 breast (1:02.78), followed by Bacon winning the 100 butterfly (53.59) and 100 IM (55.47). Tierney claimed first in the 50 freestyle (22.87) and 50 fly (24.51).

Abby Carlson of the Badgers captured the 500 free (4:51.49) and 100 free (50.90), and Mack McConagha was the winner of the 100 backstroke (53.63) and 50 back (25.37). Blair Stoneburg topped the 200 free (1:51.90), with Callahan Dunn providing a win in the 200 IM (2:02.57). The team of Carlson, Bacon, Abby Wanezek and Stoneburg combined for a time of 3:22.53 in the 400 free relay, winning by almost three seconds.

The only non-Wisconsin win for the women came in the 1000 free, where UCLA’s Ashley Kolessar edged out the Badgers’ Maddie Waggoner by eight hundredths, 10:06.12 to 10:06.20.

Wisconsin’s team of Sam LorenzMatthew SegalCharlie Jones and Taiko Torepe-Ormsby finished first in the 200 medley relay in 1:28.66. Lorenz took the top spit in the 100 back (48.38) and 50 back (22.48), and Segal grabbed the breaststroke sweep over 50 (25.56) and 100 yards (55.36). Jones won the 100 fly (48.92) while Torepe-Ormsby swept the 50 free (20.05) and 50 fly (21.88).

Yoav Romano took first in the 500 free (4:23.90) and 200 free (1:37.70) while Dominik Torok placed first in a tight 100 IM (49.82) and Chris Morris won the 100 free (44.43). Landon Kyser cruised to the win in the 200 IM (1:49.96), and veteran Yigit Aslan dominated the 1000 free (9:07.87). Morris, Romano, Nico Butera and Conner Hogan took first in the 400 free relay in 2:59.95.
