Winter Juniors-East: Summer McIntosh Stars Again, Kaii Winkler Sets NAG During Fast Prelims Session
Another night of fast performances is on the horizon at the Winter Juniors Championships-East, which are being held at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. Final-day preliminaries suggest several more National Age Group standards will be under fire, and one mark even went down during the a.m. session.
Just weeks after he set an NAG in the 15-16 class in the 100-yard freestyle, Kaii Winkler took his record even lower with a swim of 42.21. That time was faster than the 42.52 he managed at the Florida State Championships.
Here is a complete look at what unfolded during Saturday morning’s prelims session.
Girls’ 200 Backstroke
Canadian star Summer McIntosh, demonstrating her versatility, easily clocked the fastest swim of the morning, as she cruised through her heat in 1:52.37. Across all of her events this week, McIntosh has dropped considerable time from the morning to the night, which means a sub-1:50 outing is certainly in the mix for finals. McIntosh was followed by 14-year-old Charlotte Crush, who went 1:53.27 and is carrying momentum from a 13-14 NAG in the 100 backstroke from Friday night.

Daniel Diehl, who recently clocked an NAG in the long-course version of the 100 backstroke, will be the heavy favorite for the title in the 200 backstroke. Diehl checked in at 1:41.72 for his morning swim, which was comfortably ahead of the 1:42.46 of Ben Irwin. Diehl will be expected to push the 1:40 barrier during finals.

Kaii Winkler continues to lower the NAG (15-16) in the 100 freestyle, as he blasted a time of 42.21 in the morning, a swim that was considerably faster than the 42.52 he clocked on the way to a Florida high school title in November. Winkler went out in 20.22 and came home in 21.99 for his new standard. Now, he will set his eyes on going sub-42 during the evening finals. He was followed as the second seed by Hudson Williams.
