Wildcat Women Set New Pool Record On Night One of Big East Championships

Wednesday night marked the first night of competition for the 2018 Big East Swimming and Diving Championships, hosted at the SPIRE Institute in Ohio. Two relays were swum during the finals session, the 800-yard freestyle and the 200-yard medley.
Women’s 800 Freestyle Relay
Villanova women ran away with the 800 freestyle relay title, shaving 10 seconds off of their seed time and setting a new pool record of 7:11.36. Alexandra Fabbri, Taylor Wilson, Millcent Routledge, and Elise Pidutti all posted splits under 1:50.00 to put together the winning relay for the Wildcats, with Fabbri leading off in 1:45.66.
Georgetown and Seton Hall tied for second place in the longest relay event of the meet, with both teams touching in 7:25.24.
Belinda Donohoe, Lauren Rutledge, Bailey Page, and Christine Ryan combined for Georgetown, while Kylene Ronayne, Sara Ouellette, Clara Capone, and Courtney McCardle put up an impressive time for Seton Hall.
Xavier finished in fourth place, with Providence (5th) and Butler (6th) rounding out the six teams for the women’s event.

Men’s 800 Freestyle Relay
Reigning men’s champions Seton Hall looked strong with a first-place finish in the men’s event over rival Georgetown. Noah Yanchulis, Vadim Jacobson, Lior Grubert, and Tyler Kauth touched the wall in a time of 6:32.39.
Andrew Carbone, Terry Johnson, Jacob Kohlhoff, and Andrew Stange were close behind for Georgetown in second place, with a time of 6:35.30. Stange split a 1:36.06 on the anchor leg to overtake Villanova in the last leg of the race.
Villanova’s team of John Paul Naughton, John Davidson, Stephen Krecsmar, and Justin Cucchi came in third place with a 6:36.33.
Xavier’s team finished in fourth place, while Providence finished fifth.

Women’s 200 Medley Relay
The Wildcat women topped the field in the women’s 200-yard medley relay as well, with Darby Goodwin, Heather Farley, Fabbri, and Wilson combining for a time of 1:40.05. Xavier’s Paxtyn Drew, Rebecca Titterton, Caroline Gaertner, and Emily Conners were close behind in 1:41.90 for second place.
Third place went to Alexandra Rieker, Molly Fitzpatrick, Lauren Henasey, and Dorothy Morgan of Georgetown, who put up a time of 1:43.02.
Seton Hall women placed fourth, Butler was fifth, and Providence finished in sixth.

Men’s 200 Medley Relay
Villanova men topped the field in the men’s 200-yard medley relay by a second, touching in 1:28.53 for first place. Andrew Kelley, Tyler Nussbaum, John Hoin, and Nicholas Spina contributed to the win.
Xavier’s team of Samuel Johanns, Matthew Dyer, David Bunnell, and Enrique Hernandez was just behind in second place with their time of 1:29.62.
Third place went to the Seton Hall men (Christopher Tucker, Josh Tosoni, Matthew Zebrowski, and Dakota Williams) in 1:30.21.
Georgetown in fourth and Providence in fifth rounded out the competitors for the evening.

After the first evening of competition, the Georgetown women sit atop the rankings (due to the women’s 3M diving finals) with 125 points, while the Villanova women are close behind in second with 105. Seton Hall holds on to third place with 83, while Providence (67), Xavier (64), and Butler (54) round out the six competing teams.
For the men, Villanova and Seton Hall are tied for first place with 72 points. Georgetown and Xavier are tied at 64 points, and Providence is in fifth with 56 points.
Prelims begin tomorrow at 10am EST, and finals begin at 6pm EST. The 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle, and 200 freestyle relay will occur tomorrow, as well as men’s 1M diving.
