Western State Swimming Downs CSU-Pueblo
PUEBLO, Colorado, October 13. The Western State women’s swimming and diving team went into Pueblo and emerged with a 144-61 victory against CSU-Pueblo this weekend.

Western State Colorado University women’s swimming and diving program defeated CSU-Pueblo for its first win of the season. The Mountaineers earned the first win of the season on the opening weekend after losing at Adams State University a day before.
Western defeated the ThunderWolves 144-61 on Sunday. The Mountaineers won both relays and seven other swimming events in Pueblo.
Western’s Akemi King (So., Hilo, Hawaii) won both the 1,000-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle. King finished the 1,000 yards in a time of 11:06.25 and the 500 yards in 5:24.13.
Mountaineers Kate Hewson (Fr., Estes Park, Colorado), Danielle Ginsburg (Jr., Reno, Nevada), Kayla Sundada (Fr., Colorado Springs, Colorado), Hannah Meehan (Fr., Aurora, Colorado), and Alex Marsolek (So., Frisco, Texas) all won events on Sunday. Hewson won the 50-yard freestyle in 25.88; Ginsburg won the 200 individual medley in 2:20.38; Sundada won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:04.40; Meehan won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:04.22; and Marsolek won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:09.54.
Western also won the 400-yard medley relay in a time of 4:13.86 and the 400-yard freestyle relay in a time of 3:50.12.
On Saturday, Western fell to rivals Adams State 122-83. Frances Ivers (So., Plano, Texas) won the 1,000-yard freestyle against ASU. Ivers finished with a time of 11:29.83.
The Mountaineers will continue the season next Friday on the road at Colorado College.

The Colorado State University-Pueblo swimming and diving team took to the pool for the first time in program history, Sunday, hosting the Western State Colorado University Mountaineers. Freshman April McDonough (Frisco, Texas) recorded two event victories for the Pack, winning the 200 and 100 free, but the Mountaineers downed the ThunderWolves by an overall score of 144-61.
The loss drops CSU-Pueblo to 0-1 on the season in dual meets, while Western State evens its record at 1-1.
McDonough headlined the day for the ThunderWolves with her two victories. The freshman won the 200 free in a time of 1:59.18, outdistancing second-place finisher Anna Kaiser of Western State by over four seconds. In the 100 free, McDonough posted a time of 55.03 to claim her second victory of the afternoon.
The Pack recorded second-place finishes in the 200 IM, 500 free, 100 breaststroke and the 400 medley relay. In the 200 IM, Samantha Sannes (Fr., Torrance, Calif.) was narrowly defeated by Western State’s Danielle Ginsburg, 2:20.38 to 2:20.85. McDonough was the runner-up in the 500 free, while Emily Foster (Jr., Santa Barbara, Calif.) placed second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:10.67. In the 400 medley relay, the Pack quartet of Sydney Anderson (Fr., Garden Grove, Calif), Foster, Kayla Strohmeyer (Fr., Round Rock, Texas) and Leila Zijadic (Fr., North Vancouver, B.C., Canada) recorded a time of 4:23.40 to finish in second.
The Pack return to action Oct. 25 when they travel to Las Cruces, N.M. to face Division I opponent New Mexico State University. The dual-meet is slated to begin at 11:30 a.m.
