Florian Wellbrock continued his preparation for a double-pronged attack in Tokyo when he won the 1500 free in 14:46.03 in Magdeburg as Germany continued its short series of Olympic-qualifying competitions
The 23-year-old – who won the 400 on Saturday – has already been nominated in the 800, 1500 free and 10k as he looks to become the first man to win titles in both the pool and open water at the same Olympics.
Wellbrock won the 1500/10k double at the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju and on Sunday raced his first 1500 of the year.
He was pretty much stroke for stroke with Lukas Martens until the 1300m mark when Wellbrock extended his lead with a final 100 of 55.88 guiding him home to victory by more than three seconds.
Martens stopped the clock at 14:49.26 to easily get inside the cut for Tokyo of 14:59.00.
It will be a fascinating battle in Tokyo with Gregorio Paltrinieri also taking on the pool-open water double.
The Italian – who set a European record of 14:33.10 at last year’s Sette Colli – went 14:40.38 at the Italian Championships in Riccione a little over a week ago.
Wellbrock now second in the rankings behind Paltrinieri.
Isabel Gose added an 800 ticket for Tokyo to the 400 following her eight-length victory on Saturday with a time of 8:26.37 earning her a spot alongside Sarah Köhler who had already qualified.
Köhler was second in 8:28.56 with Leonie Märtens third in 8:48.94.
Christoph Fildebrandt won the men’s 50 free in 22.46 while Angelina Koehler was first in the women’s race in 25.68.
Marek Ulrich stopped the clock at 54.88 in the men’s 100 back, Lena Riedemann taking the women’s title in 1:01.90.
Yannis Merlin Willim won the men’s 200br in 2:12.36 with Magdalena Heimrath taking the women’s race in 2: 34.80.
Giulia Goerrig won the women’s 400IM in 4:52.96 and Danny Schmidt got the touch in the men’s 200IM in 2:01.30.
