Water Polo: US Women Drub Germany, 8-1
ROME, July 10. THE U.S. women's water polo team picked up right where it left off at last weekend's Holiday Cup.with a win.
After winning its third straight Holiday Cup with a victory on Sunday (July 7) against Canada, the women's squad ventured halfway around the globe for more of the same, topping Germany, 8-1, in the opening game of the Italian International Women's Water Polo Tournament in Rome.
Seven different players scored goals for the U.S., who led 6-0 at the half. Heather Moody buried two goals, while six other teammates had one apiece.
"It was great to open with a win," said U.S head coach Guy Baker. "And I think it's great that we were able to spread out the scoring."
The U.S. went 3-for-6 on the player advantage, while holding Germany to a 1-for-5 count.
U.S. goalkeeper Bernice Orwig was solid in goal, collecting nine saves on the day.
On THursday, the U.S. will play a pair of games. In the morning, the team will take on Greece and in the nightcap, they will face 2001 World Champion Italy.
