Watch Jack Conger Break 200 Fly American Record (Race Video)
AUSTIN – The Longhorn Network has produced race video of Texas’ Jack Conger breaking the American record in the 200-yard fly today.
Conger didn’t waste anytime putting up big times as he dropped an American record in the 200-yard fly during time trials at the Big 12 Men’s Championships this morning.
Conger smoked the event in 1:39.31 alongside teammate John Martens’ 1:43.58.
That swim broke the previous record of 1:39.65 shared by Michael Phelps (2010) and Tom Shields (2013).
Conger split the race 22.72, 47.32 (24.60), 1:12.66 (25.34) and 1:39.31 (26.65) in what is definitely a nice way to start the Big 12 Championships.
His swim also lowered the U.S. Open record of 1:39.33 set by Dylan Bosch last year as the NCAA record. But, Bosch’s NCAA record stands since NCAA records cannot be set in time trials.
Entering today, Conger’s top time ever had been a 1:40.34 posted during a dual meet against Arizona and SMU in January.
All Time 200 Fly
Rank | Name | Time |
---|---|---|
1 | Jack Conger | 1:39.31 |
2 | Dylan Bosch | 1:39.33 |
3 | Michael Phelps | 1:39.65 |
3 | Tom Shields | 1:39.65 |
5 | Michael Phelps | 1:39.70 |
This was an important swim for Conger, considering he was not entered in the event in the Big 12 Championships. So, his time trial was his best chance to break the American record during the conference meet without adversely impacting Texas’ team score.
Wow, the best, ever. Congrats Jack!
