Watch Canyons Break 15-16 NAG Record (Race Video)
AUSTIN – Earlier this afternoon, we reported on Canyons Aquatics taking down a 15-16 U.S. National Age Group record at the American Short Course Championships, and now we have crystal clear video of the swim thanks to Canyons’ Austin Barreiro.
Barreiro shot this amazingly close video while the foursome of Kevin Dai (20.58), Johnny Ellery (20.85), Tanner Olson (20.63) and Brandon Yong (20.82) time trialed its way to a 1:22.88.
It’s fun to experience the swim this close, while hearing Canyons Aquatics provide vociferous support to the four teens.
Original report on the NAG
During time trials today at the American Short Course Championships, the Canyons Aquatic Club downed the U.S. 15-16 National Age Group record on the boys 200-yard free relay.
After initially losing a 1:23.56 to disqualification during preliminaries, the foursome of Kevin Dai (20.58), Johnny Ellery (20.85), Tanner Olson (20.63) and Brandon Yong (20.82) time trialed its way to a 1:22.88.
That swim downed the previous record set last year by Scottsdale Aquatic Club.
The SAC quartet of Ryan Hoffer (20.31), Jack Black (19.81), Aaron Apel (22.02) and Kaleb Gould (21.06) turned in a time of 1:23.44 at a Scottsdale Aquatic Last Chance Meet in July.
Comparative Splits
1st | 2nd | 3rd | 4th | Total |
---|---|---|---|---|
Kevin Dai (20.58) | Johnny Ellery (20.85) | Tanner Olson (20.63) | Brandon Yong (20.82) | 1:22.88 |
Ryan Hoffer (20.31) | Jack Black (19.81) | Aaron Apel (22.02) | Kaleb Gould (21.06) | 1:23.44 |
The big difference is that Canyons’ team was more balanced than the Hoffer/Black powered Scottsdale Aquatics crew.
