Virginia Press Release

The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams split with ACC foe NC State Saturday afternoon (Nov. 15) at the Aquatic and Fitness Center. The Cavalier women (2-1) broke three AFC pool records on the way to a 188-112 win, while the UVa men (1-3) fell, 181-112. NC State’s men improved to 4-0 on the season, while the women dropped to 2-2.

“First off, we have several men who are stepping up in light of adversity the team has been going through and I am extremely proud of them,” UVa head coach Augie Busch said. “Our women were much more ready to go this weekend (than last weekend). They were winning the close races which was good to see and to break three pool records with the times they did them in, that is excellent for this time of year.”

In the first swimming event of the day, the women’s 200 medley relay of junior Courtney Bartholomew (Holland, Mich.), sophomore Laura Simon (Simmern, Germany), Ellen Williamson (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) and Caitlin Cooper (Atlanta, Ga.) broke the AFC pool record in a time of 1:39.40.

Bartholomew broke the pool record in the 200 back in a time of 1:54.31 and also tied the pool record in the 100 back, winning in a time of 52.58. Williamson was second in the 100 back in 54.50 and claimed the 100 fly in 53.81, while Bartholomew was second in 53.81.

In the women’s breaststroke events, Simon won the 200 in a pool-record time of 2:12.54, while also winning the 100 in 1:01.03.

Sophomore Leah Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa.) won the 1,000 free in 9:56.61 and captured the next event, the 200 free, in 1:49.17. Smith touched first in her third event, the 500 free, in 4:51.82.

In the women’s 200 fly, sophomore Kaitlyn Jones (Newark, Del.) touched first in a time of 1:59.02. Jones also captured the 400 IM in 4:17.16.

On the men’s side, junior Yannick Kaeser (Mumpf, Switzerland) captured the men’s 100 breast event in 54.11 and the 200 breast in 1:59.79. Sophomore Austin Quinn (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) placed second in three events, including the 200 free (1:38.68), 200 back (1:47.24) and 400 IM (3:54.72).

On the 1-meter diving boards, junior Colby Shinholser (Burtonsville, Md.) won with a score of 349.73, while senior JB Kolod won the 3m diving event with a mark of 386.48.

Next up, the Cavalier divers will travel to Columbus, Ohio, Nov. 21-23, for the Ohio State Invitational.

Holloway’s Breakdown

On men’s performance
“I am very proud of our guys beating a prepared Virginia team; they came out ready to go and were a great challenge for us. I felt we had some guys continue to step up today like they have been and put us in a position to close out the meet, especially when we came into the meet without any diving points.

“Winning both relays today was a big contribution to the win, but the turning point for the team was early on when Adam Linker won the 1,000 free- that set the tone for the 200 free 100 back where we picked up wins in both events. It was great having such a good performance in the sprint events as well- Simonas (Bilis) swimming under 20 seconds in the 50 free was a big victory and a great time for him.

“I thought some of our freshman stepped up for the team today; Anton Ipsen and Hennessey Stuart in particular had a great day, and we also had some great senior leadership by David Williams and John Newell. I think we had a great showing against Virginia today and we are excited to have some more chances to continue our improvement next weekend at the Nike Cup.

On women’s performance
“We had an up and down day against Virginia- the women ran into a strong and very deep Virginia team. I think we had a hard time with their depth to start and it is obvious why they were a national contender. There were some positives to the day though; we ended the meet with a win in the 200 free relay and had some top times of the season for some people.

“Several ladies stepped up today for the team and they battled hard against a great opponent. Riki Bonnema continues to show some great speed for us. Kayla Brumbaum had a great showing in the breaststroke events for us and continues to improve and make adjustments every day. For Yuri Nakano, breaking two minutes in the 200 fly was a great accomplishment for her and I thonk sets her up to build upon the improvement she’s already made. The biggest highlight of the day was Rachel Mumma walking away with two wins on the boards, but we have to continue to get better and continue to strive to be better and we will get that chance next weekend.”

“I also want to thank our fans. We had a great crowd in Charlottesville today; family, friends and alumni traveled from all over the country to watch and it was great to see so much support. It was also great to have legendary coach Don Easterling come watch and spend some time with our team and give great words of wisdom.”- Braden Holloway, head coach
