Virginia Women Take Down Fourth Relay Record of ACCs in 400 Free Relay

The Virginia women topped off their dominance of the ACC Championships with a fifth relay win in five tries, and for the fourth time this week, the Cavaliers delivered the fastest relay in history. After previous historic efforts in the 200 medley relay, 200 freestyle relay and 400 medley relay, the team of Gretchen Walsh, Kate Douglass, Lexi Cuomo and Alex Walsh combined for a time of 3:06.83, beating the previous mark set by Douglass, the Walsh sisters and Reilly Tiltmann at last season’s NCAA Championships.

Gretchen Walsh led off in 46.41, and Douglass then split 46.35 on the second leg. From there, Cuomo (47.00) and Alex Walsh (47.07) could cruise to a win by more than two seconds and new American, NCAA and U.S. Open records. The same four swimmers were responsible for the first two records of the meet while Aimee Canny handled anchor duties for the 400 medley relay, meaning that relay does not qualify for American-record status.

In total, the Virginia women finished with six NCAA and U.S. Open records this week, including two individual marks. Gretchen Walsh took down Douglass’ record in the 50 free, and Douglass swam the fastest time in history in the 100 butterfly.

Finishing second here was Louisville’s squad of Gabi Albiero, Christiana Regenauer, Julia Dennis and Ella Welch. Albiero led off in 46.95 to lead the Cardinals to a time of 3:08.92, a mark which would have been quick enough for second place at last season’s NCAA Championships. NC State’s Katherine Berkoff, Abbey Webb, Kylee Alons and Abby Arens placed third in 3:10.04.
