NEW COMMIT: Brookhaven, Penn. native and high school junior Emma Atkinson has announced her verbal commitment to Virginia Tech and will join the Hokies in the fall of 2020.

Atkinson does her club swimming with Germantown Aquatic Club and owns seven Winter Juniors (or faster) qualifying standards. She won the 200m free and 200m back and was the 100m back runner-up at NCSAs this past summer after making two finals appearances in both backstroke events at Phillips 66 Nationals. She also placed 21st in the 200m back at 2017 Summer Nationals and has participated in USA Swimming’s National Select Camp.

Also representing Germantown Academy, Atkinson is a four-time Eastern Interscholastic Swimming Championship finalist. She won the 100 free and 200 free as a sophomore after placing second in both the 200 free and 100 back during her freshman season. Atkinson has also earned NISCA All-American honors twice in her career.

She told Swimming World:

“I’m extremely excited to announce my verbal commitment to Virginia Tech! Thank you to my family, coaches, friends, and teammates for all the support throughout the years! I’m so happy to be a part of the Hokie family! #GoHokies #sergioszn”

Her best times include:

  • 100 back – 53.31
  • 200 back – 1:53.77
  • 100 free – 50.26
  • 200 free – 1:47.28
  • 500 free – 4:51.31
  • 400 IM – 4:19.62

Even with 1.5 years of club swimming still to go before suiting up for the Hokies at the start of the 2020-21 season, Atkinson will make an immediate impact in their backstroke and mid-distance freestyle groups. She would’ve scored in the A-final of the 200 back, B-final of the 100 back as well as the C-final of the 200 free and 500 free at the 2018 ACC Championships.
