Virginia Tech Keeps Sectional Champion Brendan Whitfield In State for 2023-24
NEW COMMIT: Virginia Tech has officially begun its Class of 2023 recruiting after picking up an in-state verbal commitment from U.S. Open qualifier Brendan Whitfield of Forest, Virginia.
He told Swimming World:
“I’m super excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my swimming and academic career at Virginia Tech, and I want thank my friends, family, and coaches for getting me to where I am. I also wanted to thank Albert, Sergio, and the whole team for being very supportive during the whole process. Can’t wait to be a Hokie!”
Whitfield, who does his club swimming with Lynchburg YMCA, finaled in four events at the Speedo Summer East Championships after winning the 100m fly, 100m back, and 200m back at Virginia Long Course Seniors this past summer. Last short course season, he was the 200 back champion at Christiansburg Sectionals where he also took second in the 50 free and third in the 100 fly.
His best times include (SCY/LCM):
- 50 free: 20.82 (24.29)
- 100 free: 47.43 (51.52)
- 100 back: 49.14 (56.70)
- 200 back: 1:46.78 (2:03.09)
- 100 fly: 48.98 (55.35)
Currently a junior at Jefferson Forest High School, Whitfield placed fifth in the 50 free and eighth in the 100 back as a freshman at the Virginia 4A State Championships.
