Virginia Lands Verbal From USA National Junior Open Water Teamer Alex Ayers

NEW COMMIT: The University of Virginia has added a new verbal commitment for the 2024-25 season from distance ace Alex Ayers of Charlotte, North Carolina.

He will join Harry Belcher as a member of the Cavaliers’ Class of 2028.

Regarding his commitment, she said:

“I am super excited to announce my verbal commitment to the University of Virginia. I am honored to have the opportunity to continue my academic and athletic career at such a renowned institution. Thank you to Coach Todd DeSorbo, Tyler Fenwick and Jake Shrum for giving me this amazing opportunity. Thank you to Chuck Batchelor and my coaches at SwimMAC for helping me get here. A special thanks to my teammates, friends and competitors for pushing me to be better everyday. This wouldn’t be possible without the support and love of my family. God is good! Go Hoos!⚔️⚔️”

Ayers does his club swimming with SwimMAC Carolina and most recently placed 19th in the 500 free at Juniors East where he earned a lifetime best. He finished 18th in the 800m free at the Toyota U.S. Open and took 16th in the 400m free at Junior Nationals this past summer.

He really excels in open water, where he has been named to the USA National Junior Open Water Team on two occasions. He placed 12th in the 7.5km at the 2022 FINA World Junior Open Water Championships.

His best times include:

  • 1650 free – 15:37.37
  • 1000 free – 9:15.47
  • 500 free – 4:26.26
  • 200 free – 1:38.63
  • 400 IM – 3:53.45
  • 200 IM – 1:50.72
  • 200 back – 1:49.71
  • 100 back – 52.28
  • 200 breast – 2:05.48

Currently a junior at Charlotte Catholic High School, Ayers placed second in the 200 IM and fifth in the 500 free at the North Carolina 4A State Championships last year. As a freshman, he earned bronze in both of those events at the 3A championships.
