Virginia Grad Paige Madden to Study, Train at Loughborough University
Virginia grad and Tokyo Olympic medalist Paige Madden will be spending the next two years at Loughborough University, she announced his week.
Madden made the announcement via Instagram. The graduate in kinesiology with a minor in health and well being will pursue her master’s degree in clinical exercise physiology at Loughborough. She’ll also join one of Europe’s premier training groups as she seeks to solidify a place at the 2024 Olympics.
Madden did the distance triple at the 2021 NCAA Championships, claiming the 200 free, 500 free and 1,650 free in addition to a part in the Cavaliers’ winning 800 free relay. A 14-time All-America and 13-time ACC champion, she was the ACC Swimmer of the Year in 2020 and 2021.
She parlayed that stellar NCAAs into a spot at the Tokyo Olympics. She finished second to Katie Ledecky at Olympic Trials in the 400 freestyle, an event in which she finished seventh in the Olympic final. She also earned her way onto the 800 freestyle relay with the fastest prelims leg in Tokyo, her split of 1:55.25 the second-fastest in the American squad in the final to set an American record and earn a silver medal.
Madden remained at Virginia to train and swam in the International Swimming League with the Tokyo Frog Kings last fall. The time in Loughborough will take the 23-year-old native of Mobile, Alabama, right up to Olympic trials in 2024.
