Virginia Distance Freestyler Emily Hetzer Verbally Commits to Auburn
Freestyler Emily Hetzer has verbally committed to swim for Auburn University, beginning in the fall of 2018. Hetzer trains with Occoquan Swimming Inc and attends Battlefield High School in Haymarket, VA.
Hetzer told Swimming World, “I chose Auburn because I fell in love with the campus and felt so welcomed by the awesome coaching staff and team!”
She’s a freestyler who excels at the longer distances. Her best times are:
- 200 Free 1:49.16
- 500 Free 4:47.23
- 1000 Free 9:49.27
- 1650 Free 16:23.34
Hetzer had a great spring season, posting personal best times in her top seven events in the month of March. She’s knocked 30 seconds off her best mile time since 2016 and has seen similar improvement in the 1000, where Hetzer has taken off 15 seconds in that same time frame.
In February at the Virginia 6A State Championships Hetzer finished third in the 500 freestyle with a 4:51.64.
This year Auburn’s distance group was led by the SEC Champion in the mile, senior Ashley Neidigh. While Neidigh posted a 15:56.95 for the Conference title, Hetzer is also in scoring range. Her best time would have finished 14th at this year’s Championship. She would also have been a 500 freestyle C finalist this year. Sophomore Erin Falconer, who finished 14th in the 500, will be the only scorer in that event still on the roster when Hetzer moves south.
