SANTA CLARA, California, June 21. MICHAEL Phelps and Bob Bowman met with the press after the 200 freestyle at the Arena Grand Prix in Santa Clara, detailing the good and bad points of the race.
Bowman said he was pleased with the outcome of the race, as well as Phelps’ time of 1:48.20, given that Phelps has not been training consistently for a long time. The recent three weeks of consistent training at altitude in Colorado Springs was a big factor in tonight’s performance.
Phelps said his pre-race conversation with Yannick Agnel helped him put together a strong 150 meters, and said he knows that he’ll need to put in more training to challenge Agnel in the future. Phelps wants to continue to be a part of the 800 free relay tradition at international meets, knowing that there are a lot of swimmers capable of putting together a good swim.
