MESA, Arizona, April 25. BOB Bowman discussed various aspects of getting Michael Phelps ready for his comeback meet with the media Thursday at the Arena Grand Prix in Arizona.
Among the topics he discussed was the Ultra-Short Race Pace Training method, which is used by Michael Andrew to great success. Bowman said that training method is good, and equating USRPT to eating spinach, said “I’m not going to eat it every day.”
Bowman said he’s been experimenting with various training methods in the past few months with Phelps, things that “I didn’t have the guts to do before,” such as doing much less yardage and only one workout per day.
Bowman also talks about the reasons why Phelps is swimming butterfly in the 50-meter event, saying that doing it freestyle was “a waste” and that it was a good opportunity for Phelps to get in more butterfly racing.
