Versatile Andrew Benson of SOLO Aquatics Makes 2020 Verbal to Wisconsin
NEW COMMIT: Newmarket, New Hampshire native and high school junior Andrew Benson has given the University of Wisconsin – Madison a verbal commitment and will join the Badgers in the fall of 2020.
Benson does his club swimming with SOLO Aquatics and owns five U.S. Open standards with three additional Summer Juniors cuts. He most recently competed at New England Seniors where he earned two golds and two silvers en route to achieving 100% lifetime bests. He had three finals appearances at Winter Nationals where his highest finish was an 18th-place showing in the 50 free. The NISCA All-American competed in four events at Nationals last summer and placed second in both the 200m free and 200m IM at NCSAs. Also competing for Phillips Exeter Academy, Benson won the 100 fly and 200 free at the New England DI Prep School Championships during his sophomore season.
He told Swimming World:
“I am very excited to announce my commitment to the University of Wisconsin Madison. I can not wait to join the badger family and be coached by coach Yuri Suguiyama and the rest of the Wisconsin coaching staff. I would also like to thank my coaches, teammates, and family for the support.”
His best times include:
- 50 free – 20.08
- 100 free – 44.03
- 200 free – 1:39.50
- 100 breast – 55.70
- 100 fly – 48.92
- 200 fly – 1:47.58
- 200 IM – 1:49.85
- 100 back – 52.50
Benson’s versatility will be extremely beneficial for the Badgers when he arrives in Madison as a member of the class of 2024. Even with 1.5 years of club swimming still to go, he would’ve placed in the C-final of the 100 free and 200 fly at the 2018 Big Ten Championships and sits just outside of scoring range in a handful of other events.
