Utah’s Alex Fernandes Earns Pac-12 Postgraduate Scholarship
SAN FRANCISCO – Former Utah swimmer Alex Fernandes has been named as a recipient of a Pac-12 Postgraduate Scholarship this morning by the Pac-12.
Fernandes, who hails from Sao Paulo, Brazil, will be attending the Queensland University of Technology in Australia to study Applied Finance. In the pool, Fernandes broke the school record in the 100 fly as a junior and earned a pair of top-20 finishes as a senior, junior and sophomore at the Pac-12 Championships. As a freshman, he helped Utah break the school record in the 400 medley and 200 free relays at the Pac-12 Championships.
Utah Swimming and Diving has had five former student-athletes earn postgraduate scholarships since joining the Pac-12, more than any other team. In total, 17 Utes have received postgraduate scholarships during this time, including multiple student-athletes from skiing, track & field and women’s basketball.
The scholarships, worth $9,000 each, are awarded to up to two student-athletes from each Pac-12 school annually. These worthy student-athletes maintained a minimum 3.0 grade point average and demonstrated a commitment to education, campus and community involvement, and leadership.
