Utah Lands First Class of 2026 Verbal from Junior National Qualifier Katelyn Buono
NEW COMMIT: The University of Utah has received their first verbal commitment for the 2022-23 season and beyond from Junior National qualifier Katelyn Buono of Sparks, Nevada.
She told Swimming World:
“I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Utah! I am beyond grateful for all the support from my family, friends, and coaches. Can’t wait to be a Ute!️?”
A talented backstroker and IMer, Buono trains year-round with Reno Aquatic Club and picked up three best times at St. George Sectionals last month where she earned bronze in both the 100/200 back. She was the 200 back runner-up at Far Westerns in 2019 and finaled in three events at Western Zone Seniors that summer as well.
Her best times include:
- 50 back – 27.32
- 100 back – 55.81
- 200 back – 2:00.12
- 200 IM – 2:05.92
- 400 IM – 4:24.27
Buono is currently a junior at Academy of Arts, Careers and Technology but competes for Spanish Springs High School. She placed third in the 100 back and fourth in the 200 IM as a sophomore at the Nevada 3A/4A State Championships.
Buono will add valuable backstroke and IM depth when she arrives on campus as a member of the Utes’ Class of 2026. She would’ve been No. 2 in the 400 IM and their fourth-fastest 200 backstroker last season.
