Utah Gains Verbal from Texas 6A State Finalist Sam Lucas
NEW COMMIT: Keller, Texas, backstroker and IMer Sam Lucas has given his verbal commitment to the University of Utah and will suit up for the Utes as a member of the class of 2024.
Lucas, who owns the Juniors cut in the 100 back, swims year-round with Lakeside Aquatic Club and most recently earned a best time at Junior Nationals this past summer after finaling in three events at Austin Sectionals. Last winter, he raced three events at Juniors West before going on to finish ninth in the 100 back at College Station Sectionals. Also competing for Keller High School, Lucas placed fifth in the 100 back and eighth in the 200 IM as a junior at the Texas 6A State Championships. He has also earned USA Swimming Scholastic All-American honors for his efforts.
He told Swimming World:
“I’m so excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and swim career at the University of Utah! Thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way! Go Utes!!”
His best times include:
- 50 back – 23.37
- 100 back – 50.39
- 200 back – 1:49.20
- 200 fly – 1:52.70
- 200 IM – 1:51.22
- 400 IM – 4:01.20
When he arrives in Salt Lake City at the start of the 2020-21 season, Lucas will add his talents to a training group led by David Fridlander, Max Hernadez-Nietling, and Jaek Horner. Although he’s not in scoring range just yet at the Pac-12 Championships, he has consistently made improvements each season and will become a valuable asset for Utah’s lineup.
