USMS Spring Championships: Laura Val, Gabrielle Rose, Jenny Thompson, Ally Howe Lead Record-Setting Swims

Twenty one records fell on Friday during Day 2 of the U.S. Masters Swimming (USMS) Spring National Championships in Irvine, California.

Several of the big names in the meet claimed USMS victories on Friday with record-setting performances, including Gabrielle Rose, who set four records. Laura Val, Jenny Thompson and Ally Howe were also among the record-setters.

In a meet with the most participation, the record-setting swims are adding up quickly.

Gabrielle Rose set records in the women’s 45-49 50 breaststroke and 100 breaststroke as well as the 200 IM an 50 freestyle, giving her four for the session.

Laura Val  won the 200 backstroke in 2:26.12, a masters record for 70-74. She also won the 100 free in 59.89. She has claimed dozens of masters world records over the years and continues to get to the wall first.

Twelve-time Olympic medalist Jenny Thompson won the 50-54 USMS 50 butterfly race in 25.70, faster than several younger age groups. Thompson also won the 100 freestyle in 52.00. Thompson’s swims were masters world records.

New York Athletic Club’s Ally Howe won the 200 backstroke in the 25-29 age group. The former Stanford NCAA record holder got to the wall in 1:56.74 in a masters record.

Carlo Travaini claimed a pair of records in the 60-64 50 breaststroke and 100 breaststroke.

Friday’s events included the 100 breaststroke, 200 backstroke, 50 butterfly, 200 IM, 100 free and mixed 200 free relay. Saturday will feature the 500 free, 100 butterfly, 200 breaststroke, 100 IM, 50 backstroke, 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay. Sunday’s final session will include the 400 IM, 50 free, 200 butterfly, 100 backstroke, 200 free, 50 breast and mixed medley relay.
