USC Women Stun Cal For First Time Since 2016 Behind Kaitlyn Dobler, Minna Abraham; Cal Men Cruise to Victory

The No. 7 USC women’s swim team defeated Pac-12 rival No. 5 Cal 152-148 in one of the closest meets of the year on Friday.

It was the first win for the USC women in the rivalry since 2016.

The Trojans started strong as Caroline Famous, Kaitlyn Dobler, Anicka Delgado and Vasilissa Buinaia won the 400-yard medley relay in 3:28.71, holding off Cal (3:29.05).

It set the tone for the USC women.

USC’s Minna Abraham won the 200 free in 1:43.84 and 100 free in 48.35, going 1-2 with Buinaia (48.95). Kaitlyn Dobler claimed the 100 breaststroke in 58.94 and 200 breast in 2:08.80.

Famous won the 50 free in 22.32 to hold off Cal’s Eloise Riley (22.51).

USC closed the meet with Buinaia, Delgado, Famous and Abraham winning the 200 free relay in 1:27.68.

Cal’s Kathryn Hazle won the 1000 freestyle in 9:45.19. Isabelle Stadden won the 100 backstroke in 50.74, ahead of Famous (50.83) and also won the 200 back in 1:52.20. Rachel Klinker won the 200 butterfly in 1:54.48. Mia Motekaitis won the 500 free in 4:41.77. Mia Kragh won the 100 butterfly in 52.14. Leah Polonsky won the 400 IM (4:08.59).

The Cal men defeated USC 193-106.

Cal’s Destin Lasco, Jacob Soderlund, Dare Rose and Jack Alexy won the 400 medley relay in 3:05.47 to open the men’s meet.

Lasco won the 100 backstroke in 45.71, going 1-2 with Gabriel Jett (47.53). Lasco also won the 200 back (1:41.35). Jett won the 200 free in 1:34.79. Matthew Jensen won the 100 breaststroke in 53.74. Rose took first in the 200 fly (1:42.35) and 100 fly (46.51). Alexy (19.30) and Bjorn Seeliger (19.32) went 1-2 in the 50 free. Alexy (41.94), Seeliger (42.33) and Jensen (43.47) went 1-2-3 in the 100 free.

Alexy, Samuel Quarles, Jett and Lasco won the 200 free relay (1:18.20).

USC’s Krzysztof Chmielewski won the 1000 free in 8:53.72 and 500 free in 4:20.01. Chris O’Grady won the 200 breaststroke in 1:55.35. Sanberk Yigit Oktar won the 400 IM (3:47.74).
