USC Sweeps Rival UCLA For First Time Behind Big Comeback from Kaitlyn Dobler

The No. 14 USC women’s swimming and diving team swept crosstown rival No. 22 UCLA, defeating the Bruins 215-85 at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center.
The Trojans swept every event for the first time in the history of the rivalry (USC leads 33-17-1).
It was also historic for being USC’s first ever Big Ten dual meet victory.
USC opened the meet with a victory in the women’s 200 medley relay with Caroline Famous, Kaitlyn Dobler, Minna Abraham and Vasilissa Buinaia got to the wall in 1:35.98. The quartet clocked a season-best in the event and posted an NCAA automatic qualifying time.
It started a big meet for Dobler in her return from injury.
USC junior Claire Tuggle clocked a 9:38.22 to lead a 1-2 Trojan finish in the 1000 free. Marlene Kahler was second in a season-best 9:46.01.
Sophomore’s Minna Abraham and Macky Hodges turned in another 1-2 USC finish in the 200 freestyle as Abraham was first in 1:44.15, followed by Hodges in 1:45.41.
USC fifth-year Caroline Famous kept the momentum going as she turned in a season-best 51.37 in the 100 back to win.
Dobler, who missed the fall due to injury, returned to her winning ways against the Bruins, clocking a season-best 58.81 to claim the 100 breaststroke.
Justina Kozan led a 1-2 Trojan finish in the 200 butterfly as she touched first in a season-best 1:55.70. Senior Genevieve Sasseville was second, also in a season-best 1:56.68.
The Trojans were dominant in the splash and dash, as Famous blasted a 22.15 for first in the 50 free. Buinaia was second in 22.78.
In the diving well, freshman Kate Miller claimed the 3-meter diving event with a final score of 334.73.
Coming out of the break, USC opened with a 1-2-3 Trojan finish in the 100 freestyle as Abraham clocked in at 48.94, Buinaia at 49.03 and Tuggle at 49.16.
Hodges won the 200 back in 1:55.07 with a strong final 50.
Dobler grabbed her second individual event win with a season-best 2:07.72 in the 200 breaststroke. Heading back to long distance, the Trojans swept the 500 free with Tuggle (4:40.13), Kozan (4:43.41), Ella Ristic (4:45.38) and Kahler (4:45.99) going 1-2-3-4.
On 1-meter, Miller dominated once again with a final score of 293.33, followed by Lee in third with a score of 278.25.
Just before the second break, Famous grabbed another season-best time to win the 100 fly in 51.84. Ashley McMillan followed it up by dropping over a second off her season-best in the 200 IM to win in 1:56.21.
USC closed the meet with a sixteenth win of the day, with Buinaia, Ristic, Tuggle and Abraham combining for 3:15.18 to take the 400y free relay.
