USA Water Polo Announces Women’s Roster for FINA World Championships

USA Water Polo Women’s Senior National Team Head Coach Adam Krikorian has announced the roster for the upcoming 2017 FINA World Championships starting this Sunday in Budapest, Hungary. Seven returners from the team that won gold at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil lead the defending World Champions into action. Captain Maggie Steffens (Danville, CA/Stanford/NYAC) and Melissa Seidemann (Walnut Creek, CA/Stanford/NYAC) are the only two-time Olympic champs on the roster for Team USA that will see six athletes take part in their first World Championship.
Alongside Steffens and Seidemann, five other athletes bring World Championship experience having won gold in 2015 in Kazan, Russia. They include Maddie Musselman (Newport Beach, CA/UCLA/CdM Aquatics), Rachel Fattal (Seal Beach, CA/UCLA/SOCAL), Kiley Neushul (Goleta, CA/Stanford/NYAC), Makenzie Fischer (Laguna Beach, CA/Stanford/SET) and Alys Williams (Huntington Beach, CA/UCLA/Huntington Beach WP).
2017 marks the first World Championship competition for 2016 Olympian Aria Fischer (Laguna Beach, CA/Laguna Beach HS/SET) in addition to debuts for Gabby Stone (La Jolla, CA/Stanford/SD Shores), Amanda Longan (Moorpark, CA/USC/Santa Barbara 805), Paige Hauschild (Santa Barbara, CA/San Marcos HS/Santa Barbara 805), Jamie Neushul (Isla Vista, CA/Stanford/Santa Barbara 805), and Jordan Raney (Manhattan Beach, CA/Stanford/Huntington Beach WP).
Team USA opens play in Budapest on Sunday, July 16 when they meet South Africa at 8:30am et/5:30am pt. They continue through group play with matches against Spain and New Zealand before the knockout stage begins on July 22. Medals will be awarded on July 28. The USA Women are the only women’s team to win four FINA World Championships (2003, 2007, 2009, 2015) and currently hold every major FINA Championship with a number one ranking in the world.
The newly launched Olympic Channel will be airing all the action from Budapest. The first match on Sunday will air on delay at 5pm et/2pm pt. For more information on The Olympic Channel, check with your local cable provider.
