Forty-seven of America’s best pool swimmers have arrived in Croatia for a 10-day training camp before the FINA world championships. This is the first time the entire team has been in one place since last summer’s nationals, where many of the swimmers were picked based on their performances.
Almost all of the top countries hold training camps before the big international meet. It allows athletes to come together as a group long before the competition, adjust to a new time zone and mesh with the coaching staff.
In these 10 days, Team USA’s captains will be picked. USA Swimming Women’s head coach Dave Salo and men’s head coach Dave Durden will speak with their respective teams about the goals at the training camp and at the world championships in Kazan, Russia, starting August 2. Tapers will begin, if they hadn’t already started. New friendships will be forged, while long-standing ones will be renewed.
USA Swimming Relay members will practice takeovers, while others will get crucial technique refinement from the coaching staff. And best of all, athletes will receive duffel bags full of new clothing, swimsuits, goggles, caps and other gear that comes with being a part of a major international traveling squad.
Team USA has been active on social media as they bond and put in some training time:
