USA Swimming Searches for a New National Team Director
COLORADO SPRINGS, December 28. USA Swimming Executive Director Chuck Wielgus has appointed an eight-person advisory committee to recommend candidates to replace retiring National Team Director, Dennis Pursley.
The committee will also offer suggestions on the job description for the position.
Pursley, the first and only US National Team Director is stepping down next month, after 13 years on the job, to take the reins as Head Coach of the Phoenix Swim Club.
The advisory committee — Wielgus will make the actual selection — consists of five coaches and three athletes. The coaches are: Jack Bauerle, David Marsh, Mark Schubert, Murray Stephens and Jim Wood.
The swimmers are Mark Henderson, Sean Killion and Cristina Teuscher.
Leading Candidates
According to several sources, three names have surfaced as the leading potential successors to Pursley: Dick Jochums, head coach of the Santa Clara Swim Club; Richard Quick, head women's coach at Stanford University; and Doug Ingram, a former president of the American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA) who currently works for the USOC.
It is not clear at this time how much interest each of these men has in assuming the National Team Director's position.
