USA Swimming Names Coaches for Pan American and World University Games
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado, September 29. USA Swimming announced on Friday the coaching staffs for the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the 2007 World University Games in Bangkok, Thailand.
For the World University Games, Dennis Dale will head the men’s team while Cyndi Gallagher will serve as women’s team head coach. Dale joins Team USA from the University of Minnesota where his accomplishments include four Big Ten titles in the last six years and 15 straight top-16 finishes at the NCAA Championships. Now in his 22nd year at Minnesota, Dale has led the Golden Gophers to 16 consecutive top-two finishes at the Big Ten Championships.
Gallagher is in her 19th season as head women’s coach at UCLA, where she has led the Bruins to top-15 finishes at the NCAA Championships in all but three of her 18 years. In addition, the Lady Bruins claimed a pair of Pac-10 team titles (2001, 2003) under Gallagher. In the international realm, she served on the advisory staff for the 1996 Olympics and served as assistant coach at the 1997, 2001 and 2005 World University Games. Gallagher also coached the 1995 National Junior Team, and coached at the 1994 National Distance Camp and the 1993 Olympic Festival.
Leading the U.S. men’s team at the 2007 Pan American Games will be University of Southern California Head Coach Dave Salo. Salo, who has coached Olympic medalists such as Lenny Krayzelburg, Gabe Woodward, Aaron Peirsol, Amanda Beard and Jason Lezak, took over at USC after serving as head coach of the Irvine Novaquatics from 1990 to 2006. Salo also served as the head coach for the United States men’s teams at the 2005 World Championships and the 2001 Goodwill Games and was an assistant coach for the 2004 men’s Olympic Team, the 2003 World Championships team, and the 2002 men’s Pan Pacific Championships team. In addition, Salo was a women’s assistant coach at the 2000 Olympics and the 1999 Pan American Games.
Paul Yetter will coach the U.S. Women’s Team at the Pan American Games. Yetter, who serves the Senior Elite Coach for North Baltimore Aquatic Club, is also the personal coach of phenom Katie Hoff. Internationally, he most recently served as an assistant women’s coach at the 2006 Pan Pacific Championships and was an assistant coach for Team USA at the 2005 FINA World Championships.
